Getting Veneers: Should You Go Traditional or Prep-less?

Veneers on Happy Patient

A smile makeover is not just about the final result. Each person is different, which is why a tailored approach is needed to create the best possible smile for everyone. Since veneers are a common part of a smile makeover journey, it is worth looking into what types of veneers are available and would best suit your needs.

One of the biggest questions your prosthodontist will explore with you is the use of minimal preparation veneers versus no-prep veneers. Today, we go over the differences to help you determine which one is right for you.

What Are Minimal Preparation Veneers?

Minimal preparation veneers are often the best option for most people. They involve minimal reshaping of the teeth (approximately 0.3-0.5 mm), which creates the ideal space needed to attach thin (contact lens-like) porcelain veneers to the front surface of the teeth. Minimal reshaping allows the veneers to adapt seamlessly to the teeth and gums, which is crucial for the long-term success and maintenance of your smile makeover.

What Are No-Prep Veneers?

No-prep veneers are exactly what they sound like. They do not require the surface of your teeth to be reshaped or ground down in any way to apply the veneers. That approach requires the veneers to be very thin and can provide excellent results for select smiles when the changes being made are minor.

Prep-less veneers are a wonderful option when you already have enough space between your teeth and are looking for a wider, fuller smile. When the shape, position, or alignment of the teeth need a substantial amount of correction, prep-less veneers are usually not recommended.

How to Know Which Veneer Type Is Best for You?

When compared to other smile makeover methods, minimal-prep, and no-prep veneers both serve the purposes of enhancing and maintaining your smile for extended periods. If you are still unsure about which option is best for you, talk with your prosthodontist.
